Based out of New York City, the New York Philharmonic has been performing since its start in 1842. This prominent and established symphony orchestra has been included in the “Big 5”, five of the most wide spread and respected orchestras in the United States since the 1950’s. The ensemble is the oldest symphony orchestra in the United States and currently plays over 180 concerts each year.
On December 18th, 2004, the Philharmonic played its 14,000th concert. Since then, they have appointed a new Music Director, Alan Gilbert and continued to play in front of packed audiences at Lincoln Center, their home performance hall. The orchestra carries on the purpose that it was founded on, which is the advancement of instrumental music.
The New York Philharmonic was the first concert performed at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, on July 1, 2006 and they played Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze that evening. This was one of the major highlights of the evening.
